Casualty estimates in the Russo Ukraine War vary widely. A quick search brought up these estimates.
- 100K Russian soldiers KIA – Moscow Times
- 43K Ukraine soldiers KIA, 370K wounded, 198K Russian soldiers KIA, 550K wounded, Ukraine President Zelensky Politico
- 700K Russian soldiers killed or wounded and 48K missing, 400K Ukraine soldiers killed or wounded and 35K missing Russia Matters
- 185K to 260K Russian soldiers KIA BBC
As you can see the estimates of Russian troop casualties varies widely; from 100K to 700K killed in action. It should be understood that casualty estimates are intelligence and neither side wants those figures to be available to their opponents. All these numbers, from various sources, popped up instantly when searched for.
Doing the same comparison with death counts in Gaza was a different story. The following was from a search for the number of civilian deaths.
- 50K+ civilian deaths NPR
- 50K+ civilian deaths underestimated by 40% Reuters
- 50K+ civilian deaths ABC
- 50K+ civilian deaths NBC
Every one of these articles cites Hamas Ministry of Health (MoH) figures, that’s why they are consistent. There is no report by Hamas on the number of fighters they have lost. I had to dig pretty hard to find estimates by the IDF. There was a statement by Benjamin Netanyahu there were 30K casualties in Gaza, 14K fighters, 16K civilians (FoxNews). This was back in May of 2024.
According to an in depth study by the Henry Jackson Institute the Hamas Ministry of Health (MoH) has misrepresented civilian death tolls; claiming 70% of the casualties were women and children. This number was also cited by the UN (BBC). These researchers point out the claim is contrary to the records released by the MoH itself.
MoH March 2025 data showed that, among 11,224 new casualties in the seven months since 7 October 2024, there were 8,565 males (76.3%) and 2,659 females (23.7%). Among these new casualties, 58% were legal combat-age males and an additional unknown but significant proportion were underage combatant males. HenryJacksonSociety.org
Whatever one believes, or more correctly chooses to believe, it is concerning the only information available on Gaza deaths is quoted from the Hamas Ministry of Health.
