Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) went to great lengths to stop a vote in the House aimed at releasing the files associated with the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. He called an early recess to avoid a second vote. The first tally was all 211 republican representatives against and 210 votes for the motion to debate a vote (New Republic).
The republican party, particularly US President for Life hopeful Donald Trump have been talking big about releasing the files to the public for years. Trump criticized the Biden administration for not publishing the files (The Hill). Biden didn’t have the support of congress that Trump enjoys of course. The point being one of Trump’s campaign promises was to release the files. He has unilaterally done anything he wants so….
Now the house is back from recess and there is another attempt at getting the files released. 218 votes are required.
So far, only three Republicans — Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Nancy Mace of South Carolina — have signed onto the discharge petition, while all 213 Democrats have signed onto it (Independent).
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was able to force a vote in the House the Never Dies. The result was 51 against and 49 for releasing the Epstein Files. Only Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) broke with their party to vote for releasing the files (The Hill).

The republicans seem to march lockstep; are they all in these files? What gives?
On 11 September 2025 Congress released a teaser pack that allegedly doesn’t contain much new information.
Congress released hundreds of pages documents this week that included a 2003 book of 50th birthday messages to Epstein compiled by his former partner, convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. The book includes notes, many of them lewd, from high-profile politicians, financiers and socialites – including the (recently) sacked British ambassador (Peter Mandelson) (USA Today).
