For years after the 1989 Tienamen Massacre organizers in Hong Kong set up public commemorations each anniversary. Mainland China largely censored any reference to the event. The massacre happened when Chinese forces moved in to quash a large anti government, pro democracy protest. 700 to 2,600 people were killed.
Now, 37 years later, the Chinese Communist Party and government have convicted two organizers of these commemorations.
Chow Hang-tung, a prominent young human rights lawyer who conducted her own defense, and former opposition lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan were found guilty of inciting subversion at West Kowloon Court on Friday. They face a jail term of up to 10 years under a national security law imposed on the city by Beijing in 2020. CNN
Why after all this time would the government of Xi Jinpeng go after people trying to keep memory of this event from being erased? To break the will of these souls and to make an example to others.
