Donald Trump has made a couple of appointments with wonder boys from the Neo con era. It’s a strange strategy for a man who ran as an alternative to the Republican status quo or alt-right.
William Barr was first appointed by then president George Bush Sr as Assistant Attorney General to the Office of Legal Counsel in 1989 at the age of 39. In 1990 he was appointed as Deputy Attorney General and after another year (in 1991) became the US Attorney General. Amazing.
Michael Caputo worked for Ronald Reagan and was in charge of George Bush Sr media campaign during the 1992 elections. He was 30 years old. He moved to Russian and worked for Vlad Putin as an image builder and was subsequently investigated by House committee on Intelligence for involvement in Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential election. He was recently appointed by Trump to run media affairs for the Department of Health and Human Services.
Another odd appointment, although technically not from the Neo Con era. is Michael Flynn. A retired Lieutenant General the served as the National Security Advisor briefly to Donald Trump. He had been forced to retire early from his position in the Defense Intelligence Agency according to leaked Colin Powell e-mails because he “worked against policy” and for “bad management” among other things. As part of the Russian manipulation probe he made a plea bargain with Robert Mueller for willfully lying to FBI agents, a charge that AG Barr intends to drop. That’s being challenged.
Strange appointment indeed.
