Action, Reaction- Israel and Iran

In A Dead Scientists Spawns Misinformation Campaign we discussed the internal strife affecting Iran. The assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, an Iranian military scientist, is the main topic. The amateur nature of the attack makes it obviously the work of a resistance movement opposed to the Iranian Theocracy without the support of foreign powers. It is also obvious the Iranians do not want this fact advertised.

The 2019–2020 Iranian protests, sometimes known as Bloody November,.. were a series of nationwide civil protests in Iran that took place in 2019 and 2020. Initially caused by a 50–200% increase in fuel prices, they occurred as part of the wider Iranian Democracy Movement, leading to calls for the overthrow of the government in Iran and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. On 27 November, 2020 Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, an Iranian nuclear physicist and Iranian Revolutionary Guard officer was assassinated. He was considered the chief of the Iranian nuclear weapons program. The Iranians tried to blame the attack on Israel to divert attention from their internal strife. Wikipedia

In September of 2022 a new round of protests erupted upon the death of 22 year old Mahsa Amini. She died on the 16th after being beaten by the Guidance Patrol for wearing her hijab improperly. The protests lasted into the spring of 2023. Wikipedia

On 3 January 2024, a commemorative ceremony marking the assassination of Qasem Soleimani at his grave in eastern Kerman, Iran, was attacked by two bomb explosions. 94 people were killed and over 250 injured. The bombing was carried out by ISIS-K and the Iranian government was warned by the US government before the attack. Iran ignored the warning (Iran International).

The Kerman bombing is similar to other ISIS operations. On 24 March, 2024 the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk Russia was attacked by a group of ISIS-K terrorists. The US also warned Moscow of an impending attack which was also ignored Wikipedia.

These two attacks benefited the governments that were victimized; that’s why the warnings were ignored. Vladimir Putin faces unrest in his country because of resistance to his war in Ukraine (Voices, I Hear Voices). The Ayatollah Khamenei also faces unrest in his country as noted above.

Terrorist attacks unite populations behind their leaders. In the face of an external threat people will forget grievances they have with their governments in exchange for perceived security. These ISIS-K attacks helped, as intended, Putin and Khamenei. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out who is playing god to ISIS.

On 13 April, 2024 Iran launched a missile attack at Israeli targets Wikipedia. The attack was largely a failure. 32 people were injured including a 7 year old Israeli Bedouin girl who was struck by parts of a missile. Iranian press called the assault a success; a statement for domestic consumption. The attack was intended to cause damage to Israel but more importantly to goad the Israelis into a response.

The giants believe a strong Israeli response to the Iranian attack will likely have the same affect as a terrorist attack. The idea is to increase support for the Iranian government and weaken support for anti government forces and movements. An Israeli strike will probably not cause the downfall of the oppressive Iranian theocratic regime.

US President Joe Biden’s statement to Netanyahu was that the US would not participate in a retaliatory strike against Iran (Reuters). This is on point. The Israelis absolutely have the right to strike back at Iran; but is that wise? The Iranian government is under internal pressure, why do anything to strengthen their domestic posture by striking targets in Iran? Israel has their hands full with the Iranian proxy force Hamas.
