Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 – July 22, 2008) was an American actress born in New York. She was born to Jewish Polish immigrants and worked as a secretary. She acted in New York city theater roles until getting noticed in 1982, aged 59, for her Broadway role as Ms Beckoff in Torch Song Trilogy. In 1985 she was cast as Sofia Petrillo in the sitcom “Golden Girls.”

Getty died in the early morning hours of July 22, 2008, at her home in Los Angeles, three days shy of her 85th birthday, the result of Lewy body dementia, according to her family. Natalie Lynn “Samantha” Rupnow (November 7, 2009 – December 16, 2024) was the student and school shooter at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. She joined a gun club in the months prior to the shooting. Police are still investigating a possible motive.
