We Need a Technological Edge?

Above; Trump having a Phil moment

President again Donald Trump has cut spending for scientific research, particularly from the National Institute of Health (Huffington Post). Researchers across the nation are facing a ban on new grants, potentially hobbling the US technological edge in the field of medical biology.

The new administration imposed a blackout on the NIH and other health agencies on most communications with the outside world and banned travel, forcing the cancellation of meetings needed for decisions about what research to fund next in the fights against cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other diseases. (NPR)

Biomedical research is our effort to cure diseases and provide better treatment for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. Research is also necessary to keep our nation’s ability to defend against bio-weapons. A pause on these efforts will leave our people and military vulnerable to future attacks.

The Constitution makes it clear; the budgeting of government money is the responsibility of Congress, not the office of the Executive. Letting businessmen make decisions that can affect the future health and national security stance of the US is a mistake. Maybe Trump is out to sabotage the US and the Republican Party.

Congress and the Supreme Court need to put a leash on these guys.
