A CNN article by Yahya Abou-Ghazala, Jeremy Diamond, Abeer Salman, Gianluca Mezzofiore, Mohammad Al-Sawalhi and Madalena Araújo purports to show the scene on Sunday morning, June 1, when Hamas claims the IDF fired upon and killed “at least 27 Palestinians” seeking aid (CNN). The story claims video, experts and witnesses back Hamas’ claim.
The associated video shows a purported expert using the sound of rifle fire to determine who fired the weapons. Palestinians witnesses can be counted on to claim any incident is caused by the IDF based on who they fear; they live with Hamas.
Footage released by the IDF disputes accounts of the incident (NewYorkPost). The footage show a Palestinian in the crowd with a rifle shoot another Palestinian. The claim by the IDF is Hamas is attempting to disrupt humanitarian aid that doesn’t go through them. The video does not show a mass shooting event or multiple casualties. Video from the IDF show’s the incident occurring in morning daylight hours, the one from CNN is either sunset or sunrise and at a different location.
So which is the true account of events? This is yet to be determined, and we may not ever know. One thing is certain; the CNN article may discourage people from seeking aid that Hamas has repeatedly attempted to disrupt.
