Marimar Martinez was shot by a Border Patrol agent during an incident in Chicago on 4 October 2025. Her lawyer is drawing parallels between the incident and the shooting of Renee Nicole Good on 7 January 2026.
Martinez was shot 5 times by an ICE officer that claimed she rammed his car. Martinez had been accused of “aggressively and erratically” pursuing CBP agent Charles Exum. This claim was pushed by the Trump administration as a justification for the shooting. Martinez was charged with being a threat to law enforcement.
Martinez’s story was the ICE agent rammed her car. Her lawyer Christopher Parente said video footage shows a Border Patrol agent saying “Do something, b—-” before shooting her.
The charges were dismissed by US District Judge Georgia Alexakis came after she repeatedly raised concerns about the handling of the investigation, including the revelation the vehicle of the Border Patrol agent who shot Martinez was moved 1,000 miles away after the incident and text messages showing the agent apparently bragging about the shooting.
Exum sent an article from The Guardian on October 7 to a group of other agents, which quoted Parente saying Martinez had “seven holes in her body from five shots from this agent.” Exum said in the next text. “Read it, 5 shots, 7 holes.” When Parente pressed him in court on what he meant, Exum responded he was a firearms instructor. He said, “I take pride in my shooting skills.” Another message to the group read, “I have a MOF amendment to add to my story. I fired 5 rounds, and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys” CNN
The Department of Homeland Security called the shooting “defensive.” Kristi Noem claimed the shooting of Renee Good was justified for the same reason; because people have been harassing and pursuing ICE agents on their way to deport brown people.
