Former president Donald Trump didn’t care much for NATO, neither do his gods. He stated in April of 2022 that during his presidency he threatened not to defend other NATO countries from an assault by Russia (Washington Post). According to the article Trump’s national security advisor John Bolton expressed fears Trump would pull out of the alliance.

According to Mark Esper, former Secretary of Defense, Trump had said confidentially he planned on pulling out of NATO and cutting the US alliance with South Korea if he won a second term. Esper was claimed he was quietly rooting for Biden to win the elections (Independent).

Business Insider published an article about research by Leonard Schuette of the University of Maastricht, who interviewed 23 senior NATO and member-state officials about Stoltenberg’s central role in placating Trump and preserving the alliance. According to Schuette, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had to use diplomacy and interpersonal skills to avoid Trump blowing up the alliance.

Trump’s anti NATO rhetoric has made such an impact that last July the Senate made it impossible for a president to pull out of NATO without a 2/3 majority vote in Congress (Defense News).

Stupid and ill timed rhetoric or part of a bigger plan; I’m sure Vladimir Putin and his gods are quite happy with Trump. Particularly with his anti free world suggestion we stop assisting Ukraine in their struggle against Russian occupiers.
