Sir Winston Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a military officer, politician and writer. He is best known as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II.
Churchill was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1895. He went to Cuba, India and Sudan. After his service he became a journalist. He was captured by Boer forces in South Africa while covering the conflict. He escaped and re joined the British Army to fight in Pretoria (2nd Boer War).
In 1901 he entered politics and gained a seat in the House of Commons. He served as Conservative MP then changed parties and became a Liberal MP. He served in other government posts including First Lord of the Admiralty.
In 1915 he left politics and re joined the British Army and served on the Western Front in World War I. After his service in France he went back to politics.
At the outset of World War II he became the Prime Minister of England. His speeches hardened British resolve against those who wished to negotiate a peace or surrender to the Third Reich. Churchill regretted the allies did not attempt to take Berlin before the Soviet Union and foresaw the Cold War.
He continued to serve in government after the war and became Prime Minister again. He wrote books on his time during World War II and won a Nobel Prize for literature in 1953.
Winston Churchill suffered a stroke on January 10, 1965 and died 2 weeks later.
This is Loran K Cole (CNN) (November 11, 1966- August 29, 2024) a convicted murderer who was executed in Florida. As a youth Cole had been incarcerated in a now shuttered State run reform school where boys were beaten and raped. The State of Florida apologized to those who had been held there. In 1994 Cole and William Paul assaulted a pair of siblings in a campground. Cole killed the brother and raped his sister. She escaped and police were able to identify the perpetrators. Paul was sentenced to life and Cole to death. He was executed by lethal injection on August 29, 2024.
