Rescinding DEI Interferes With Military Training

Today the US Air Force reported they had removed courses on the Tuskegee Airmen to comply with President again Donald Trump‘s order halting Diversity Equity and Inclusion programs in the Federal Government (Reuters). The Tuskegee Airmen were black pilots who served in combat during World War II, a time when Jim Crow laws were still in effect in some US states and the military was still segregated.

The claim that erasing history of past failures of our society will ease division is weak and unproven. Understanding past mistakes helps to keep us and our future selves from similar shortcomings or outright atrocities. Our nation should not have to bow to a politician’s appeal to his political base.

Today’s multicultural military thrives because of it’s ability to maintain cohesive units focused on teamwork. These units are made up of people from all over the country with different races, genders and backgrounds. Diversity education plays a key role in making this possible.

The Tuskegee Airmen was a group of primarily African American military pilots (fighter and bomber) and airmen who fought in World War II. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) of the United States Army Air Forces. Wikipedia
