Above; Trump having a Phil moment
Tomorrow President for Life hopeful Donald Trump is going to announce tariffs for “Liberation Day!” (cue triumphal celebratory music) What we’ve heard of his tariff plans sounds less than liberating, possibly catastrophic.
Trump has talked about tariffs on Mexico, Canada, the European Union and other nations. Tariffs at a time when our economy is coming down from overdrive mode that drove up inflation is ill advised. Tariffs will reignite inflation. Coupled with job losses due to the illegal DOGE led by his cohort Elon Musk and the associated loss of tax revenue the deficit will surely rise. This is economic sabotage.
This sabotage has the potential to extend beyond the boundaries of the United States. This is where the real problem arises.
During the US initiated Great Recession of 2007-2008; The International Monetary Fund estimated that large U.S. and European banks lost more than $1 trillion on toxic assets and from bad loans from January 2007 to September 2009. Wikipedia
The intertwining of economies that trade with the United States has been growing since the Great Recession. Mexico is battling cartels that kill around 40K civilians a year. Ukraine is attempting to retain their independence from Russian President for Life and former KGB agent Vladimir Putin. Ukraine will be relying on support from the EU in lieu of Trump’s wish to halt funding earmarked by Congress. PRC President for Life Xi Jinping is licking his lips over territories in the South Pacific, particularly Taiwan.
A financial crisis in Mexico will not help them fight cartels or the slow the fentanyl that is smuggled into the United States. A financial crisis in the EU will restrict their ability to assist Ukraine’s struggle against the Russian Federation. Financial problems in Australia and the US will not serve to deter Chinese aggression in the Pacific. Trump’s economic calculus will likely embolden these dictators and criminals.
Congress, particularly the Republican party, needs to put their collective foot down on the Big T.
