UN Leaders Issue Condemnation of Russian Invasion of Georgia

Today several members of the UN Joint Security Council issued a joint statement condemning Russia’s actions on the anniversary of the 2008 war with Georgia. Donald Trump‘s newly appointed US Representative Dorothy Shea was absent.

In 2008 Vladimir Putin‘s Russian forces invaded Georgia after their conflicts when mostly ethnic Russian separatists in South Ossetia attempted to break away from Georgia.

Russia falsely accused Georgia of committing “genocide” and “aggression against South Ossetia”—and launched a full-scale land, air and sea invasion of Georgia, including its undisputed territory, on 8 August Wikipedia

The declaration highlighted concerns over annexation efforts, unlawful detentions of Georgians, restrictions on education in their native language, damage to Georgian cultural heritage, and other violations. It condemned the killings of Davit Basharuli, Giga Otkhozoria, Archil Tatunashvili, Tamaz Ginturi, Vitali Karbaia, and Irakli Kvaratskhelia, calling for accountability. It also stressed the right of displaced persons to return to their homes and urged Russia to withdraw its forces from Georgian territory and revoke its recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.
