On 25 August 2025 Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa stated during a meeting with an Arab media delegation.

“Some portray us as terrorists and an existential threat, while others want to use the new Syria to settle scores with Hezbollah. We are neither,” al-Sharaa explained.

In other words he has no intention of interfering with Hezbollah’s activities.

Hezbollah supported Bashir al-Assad‘s government during the Syrian Civil War. Syria has long laid claim to Lebanon and supported Hezbollah. The terrorist militia controls the southern part of Lebanon; the government is too weak to assert control in the region. The Free Syria Army faded into irrelevancy when Bashir al-Assad high tailed it to Vlad Putin land and Ahmad al-Sharaa miraculously took power.

During the Syrian Civil War Hezbollah sent troops to assist the Baathist government. They constructed weapons manufacturing sites and smuggling routes in Syria to build stockpiles in Southern Lebanon. They also smuggled weapons supplied by Iran with these over land routes. They were brutal to Syrian civilians they encountered in battles.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the deaths of 210 civilians at the hands of Thu al-Fiqar from December 7 to 27, 2013 while the pro-regime coalition moved into al-Nabk. Among the dead were at least 56 children and 55 women. In the aftermath of the massacres, residents found numerous burnt or carbonized bodies and reported widespread looting by the invading forces. Among the most notorious incidents was the mass killing of the Hassoun and Moussa Hassan families, in which 45 people, including 30 women and children, were “burned to death and then sprayed with a chemical substance.” Pakistan Defense

Hezbollah’s activities during the Syrian Civil War has left them isolated but still supported by Iran.

US President not for life Donald Trump recently hosted Ahmed al-Sharaa, former al-Queda operative turned president of Syria (AP News). Al-Sharaa is trying to get US sanctions against Syria permanently repealed.

Israel is reporting Hezbollah is still smuggling weapons from Syria. The Lebanese government is supposed to disarm Hezbollah. They have had little success and little stomach for confrontation with Hezbollah. Hezbollah is refusing to disarm. They could end up as just another terrorist group no one but Israel is willing to deal with. If Israel deals with them they will face backlash from the Western Press and governments. In other words Hezbollah will be allowed to survive as an organization, rebuild, repeat…. Maybe just tell the Israelis to build another Iron Dome.
