In the post Smiling Nicolas is Actually Happy we explored the notion that US President (no longer for life) Donald Trump is actually helping Venezuelan President for Life Nicolas Maduro. Trump has been friendly with Maduro. He was given authorization by SCROTUS to send 300K Venezuelans back to Venezuela (CNN). In August Chevron got permission to begin importing oil from Venezuela (Reuters).
The imposition of US Navy power in the Caribbean is causing fear in the Venezuelan populace resulting in rallying power for Maduro. People are forgetting the opposition movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Machado‘s people’s revolution. This is re cementing Maduro’s hold on power.
Moreover, despite the anti-American rhetoric, renewed business with U.S.-based Chevron has in recent years provided the cash flow needed to keep the Bolivarian revolution afloat. Now, with U.S. ships and aircraft patrolling the southern Caribbean, for the first time there seems to be a real antagonism between Washington and “21st Century Socialism.” Maduro is seizing the opportunity. If the Trump administration’s counternarcotics offensive fails to fracture the ruling coalition in Miraflores, chavismo could find a second wind by “heroically resisting” the siege of a foreign power. Your TV News, both left and right leaning, have been notoriously silent on this oil deal. This is a job for a PBS documentary! Oh yeah, they got their funds cut (PBS).
The initial impulse is to point a finger at Chevron and other US oil companies that stand to gain money from this deal. However, the revolutionary movement to oust Maduro began with the elections in 2024 (Wikipedia). Maduro’s regime was already in trouble when Chevron was given permission to resume oil imports. Chevron may now be more likely to support Trump in his Caribbean theatrics. The reason; they got played by the playahs; set up as the scapegoats. Everyone wants to blame big oil and big money for these things.
If Machado’s movement unseated Maduro I’m sure they would be more than happy to export to the United States, and be able to at higher volumes. Maduro has always sold oil to China and Russia at as much volume as they can ship. The man gods don’t care if the US looks like shit; they don’t believe in democracy anyway.
The real reason; the fascist man gods of Mordor want Nicolas Maduro <to stay in power while Xi Jinpeng and Vladimir Putin continue to benefit from the Venezuelan oil industry.
