The Budget Battle Wears On…..

Aid for Ukraine is still being held up by congressional GOP clowns. This time they want reform to immigration and refugee claims laws. Their concerns do not fall on deaf ears. However, the existing laws were made by Congress. These guys are probably too busy juggling and honking their noses to realize this.

The most recent history of laws for those claiming refugee status dates back to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. It was formed to bring nations into conformity and help deal with displaced persons from World War II. The law in the US has evolved over time. This includes the dissolution of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) after the 9/11 attacks. Responsibility for these issues was given to the Department of Homeland Security- (Immigration Equality).

This time Senate Republicans walked out of appropriation talks based on their dislike of US Immigration law (Defense News). The irony is Congress writes the laws, the office of President and his executors are tasked with enforcing those laws. The money going to these efforts needs to be there whether the law changes or not. The Border Patrol budget has increased steadily for decades including the last 6 years under Trump and Biden. They need money too, now.

If the good Senators think there is something wrong with the law they should submit a bill and rewrite it. The rest of us have a pretty good idea how long that will take – too long.

In the meantime… pass the appropriations bill.
