Do unbaptized children go to hell? We would find this idea abhorrent. Catholicism of today teaches that we can pray for unbaptized children who die and hope they aren’t sent to purgatory. However, theologians of early Christianity, up through medieval times, believed children did suffer after death. Why?
Pope St Gregory the Great uses Job 9:17 “He Who would crush me with a tempest and multiply my wounds for nought” to conclude that unbaptized children would go to hell. Yhwh allowed the Adversary ( הַשָּׂטָ֖ן or hasatan, devil ) to put Job through afflictions; though the latter was guilty of no sin.
“Hold most firmly and never doubt that, not only adults with the use of reason but also children who either begin to live in the womb of their mothers and who die there or, already born from their mothers, pass from this world without the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, which is given in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, must be punished with the endless penalty of eternal fire. If we see what the giants do we see that children also suffer. The early theologians were simply describing what they saw in the context of their beliefs. Because we want things to be a certain way doesn’t make us correct.
