On December 4, 2024, Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed on a Manhattan sidewalk. The man arrested for the crime is Luigi Mangione, a young man from a well to do Baltimore family. Mangione had previously undergone surgery but was not insured by United Healthcare.
It seems unlikely that a man with his potential would “snap.” A man with means could affect the health care system by becoming a lawyer, entering the business of health insurance or becoming a politician.
He has attained hero status with a small percentage of the populace, particularly young people. Most polled consider him a criminal. If this event will sway public opinion against the Affordable Care Act remains to be seen. The charges against him include the charge of terrorism which is being contested.
